With a compatible charger and inverter setup, you can prioritise charging your car from your own solar generation rather than the grid. If you already have solar or battery storage installed, we’ll check your existing setup for compatibility before recommending a charger.
The EV Chargepoint Grant currently covers 75% of the cost of a home charger, up to £500, but it’s been restricted to renters, flat owner-occupiers and leaseholders, and landlords installing for tenants since 2022 (the £500 cap itself is an April 2026 increase from £350). Homeowners in a standard house are no longer eligible. We’ll confirm what, if anything, applies to your situation as part of your quote.
Tethered or untethered?
A tethered charger has the charging cable permanently attached, so you just plug straight in. An untethered charger has a universal socket instead, and you use your car’s own cable. Charging speed is identical either way. It’s purely a matter of convenience versus a cleaner-looking unit, and whether you’re likely to charge more than one vehicle from the same point.
Almost every UK home charger runs at 7kW, adding roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour of charging. A full charge of a typical 60kWh EV battery from empty takes around 8–10 hours, which is why most owners charge overnight rather than waiting around for it.

Can I charge an EV from my solar panels?
Yes, with a compatible charge point and inverter setup you can prioritise charging your car from your own solar generation. Many smart chargers can be set to only draw from excess solar rather than the grid, topping up automatically whenever your panels are generating more than the house is using.
Do I need a separate consumer unit or circuit?
Your charger needs its own dedicated circuit back to the consumer unit, which we install as part of the job. If your existing consumer unit doesn’t have capacity, we’ll flag that, and any additional work needed, as part of your quote.
Can I install a charger without off-street parking?
You need somewhere to safely run the cable from your home to your car without it crossing a public footpath. We’ll confirm what’s possible for your specific property during the survey.
